Analogue or digital? Is 2012 the year to change your opinon on sound systems?

The thought of how we can produce our live sound weighs heavily on our minds. We assume that analogue is the norm and innovation news informs us that digital is the direction in which the industry is going at a fast pace.

With the advent of digital power amps, mixing desks and processors and even digital multicore links, high power, lightweight and compact PA systems are available for all levels of live performance from pub bands to stadium rockers.

The technology comes at a price! This price, although now more affordable than ever thanks to budget priced equipment from Soundcraft, Allen and Heath, Crown, Yamaha DBX and Showtec, is still too high for some.

For those of us who are happy to ignore the ergonomic and time saving benefits of DSP settings, onboard wizard selection tools and huge memory banks, they will soldier on with the real-time immediacy of the analogue knob-twiddling without a computer screen or digital read out in site.

Although erring on the side of caution many of us sound geeks favour the analogue tools that we all grew up but the truth of the matter is you can carry around a lot of kit in a small space if you go digital. This is especially applicable to line array or small medium throw PA boxes controlled by DSP settings and governed by a digital mixing desk packed full of all the add-on processing tools that would take up all the space in a six foot effects rack if provided by their analogue counterparts.

Budgeting for the sound system that your band wants to use will always throw up issues and wading your way through the pros and cons of all the above will be best achieved by visiting your nearest specialist PA centre.

Anyone who remembers those good old Southern boys from Atlanta,The Georgia Sattelites, will be kicking themselves if they don't snap up the last few tickets for Dan Baird and Homemade Sin's show at Colwyn Bay FC on Sunday December 4th.

Dan and two other original Satellites have relocated to Nashville and recently headed over to Europe for a string of dates through, France, Germany and the Baltics. The band call in at the Hard Rock Hell event at Pontins, Prestatyn on Saturday for a lunchtime gig before making their way down the coast for their Bay debut on Sunday. Support for the show comes from a new Bay based classic rock band featuring former members of Mothership, Box of Frogs, Think Lizzy and Swampfoot.

The Marine in Old Colwyn was packed to the brim last Saturday night as 200 rock fans took a step back in time all in aid of a good cause.

Members of some of the premier North Wales rock bands of yester year gathered to honour the memory of the late Kev Williams, a fine guitarist who sadly passed away 10 years ago, after a long and courageous battle against Van Heusen's disease, a crippling neurological ailment.

Kev's widow Pam organised the fund raiser at the Marine in order to raise much needed cash for the Sarah Dickinson brain scan trust. Her hard work paid off as over £2,000 was raised for the trust by the event.

An almighty din was made for Kev as his former band mates from One Night Stand, Remedey and Big House joined in the night that also featured ex members of Mothership, Bad Moon, Roadhouse, Stormy Monday, Harvest Moon, White Tyrgrz, Think Lizzy, Burn, kookachoo, Funky Fingers, Vengeance and Hungry Touch.

ASLS Ltd were proud to supply the PA system for the event that sent everyone that attened home happy with their ears ringing.

Restringing 12 string acoustic guitar

We had the pleasure of replacing the worn, corroded strings on a Vintage V400 twelve stringer on Monday. The instrument was a few years old and in good condition. We cleaned the fret board, nut and bridge thoroughly and replaced the strings. After a good stretch and tune up, the guitar was jangling away like a good un! Awesome sound - the wood had aged well to produce a lovely tone.

Our guitar tech commented that this lovely instrument is in perfect condition after several years of regular use and would benefit from some new machine heads - they are stressed from too many string winds around the posts (people often make the mistake of wrapping the strings around too many times). It is so difficult to tune and hold in tune a guitar with ruined machine heads (people often blame the machine heads too, when they are the ones who've knackered them through misuse). He also thinks a new bridge would help the dynamics - a nice bone one would do the trick. He thinks he knows it all, this guy! Anyway we trust his judgement on most things plank like.

JHS Vintage V300 acoustic strikes a chord

This lucky chap was treated to a new acoustic guitar by his dad. Having trawled the market for a suitably sized, highly playable, quality instrument he settled on the Vintage V300 sunburst model. This was voted by Guitar magazine as the best guitar under £1000 - a big claim and you'd have to test one out yourself to see whether you agree. The specifications for the money are very good and the guitar performs extremely well and we are sure that this young man will have years of playing pleasure.

His dad has another brand of guitar that cost a lot more money; he says that this Vintage sounds and plays much better. As can be expected, this size of guitar has a very bright sound but there is plenty of depth to it too. The neck is good; nice action and it works well with a plectrum and for finger picking. We believe it is great value for anyone wanting a decent acoustic guitar without spending the earth.

A mother of all gigs

Tremendous show from Bay boyos Mothership who rocked their way through a great walk thru' of classic Led Zep complete with an acoustic medly and a crushing "Kashmir" to end on at Lllandudno Junction Labour club last Saturday.

Hats of (not to Roy Harper) but to Arthur Holden for having the vision to put together such a superb tribute band that does the memory of one of the greatest classic rock bands ever true justice.

Having seen Mothership before I knew what to expect whereas co-headlining band Four Weel Drive lived beyond great expectations. This is a band that has massive potential - great songs, dynamic arrangements and a hell bent for leather, good time rock and roll party attitude that is infectous.

Should these four lads from Twickenham be lucky enough to float to the surface from the flotsom and jetsam left by acts such as Airbourne and Rose Tattoo then rest assured they can cut it with the best. Songs such as "White Lines, "Big, Fat and Ugly" and "Blood on the Walls" from the debut High Roller album are already classics.

With a second album currently being put together you would have to be mad not to get a ticket for the band's forthcoming gig at Colwyn Bay FC on Saturday June 25th.

I saw Mike Peters use his Sparrow at this year's Gathering in Prestatyn. Guitar looked the biz and sounded great!

Wow; what a show! Has to be one of the best music events I've been to. I could only attend the Friday night but it was fantastic. After Rusty Egan's DJing, Mike kicked off the evening with a solo spot. Introduced by Gaz Top - a master presenter indeed - Mike came to the small centre stage. Just him, his Gibson acoustic and a harmonica. He had the crowd in his hands and he delighted all his followers.

His performance - as always - is totally honest; bearing his soul through his music and lyrics. After half a dozen solo numbers, the band appeared and we were given a further treat - this one more sonic with drums, bass, keyboard and a lead guitar (albeit acoustic; but who cares when you're listening to James Stevenson). A fantastic session!

A bit of a breather and blow me if Mike doesn't appear with Big Country on the main stage. More treats were delivered! (Actually I've already seen him in action with BC in Liverpool, so it was second helpings of tasty numbers for me - and many other Gathering goers too.)

Mike has grasped the nettle by taking on the Big Country frontman role. But what a great job he's doing. And, you can tell that the other members of the band gel with him. He isn't trying to take the place of the late and great Stuart Adamson but he is doing his memory proud. And what of the others? Big Country rock 100% - one of the tighest groups on the planet. Bruce and Jamie Watson crank out the melodies, with Tony Butler and Mark Brzezicki providing solid sonics. Tony's bass playing is outstanding.

Anyone reading this that missed this year's Gathering - do yourself a favour and keep an eye out for the next one. In the meantime note that Mike is supporting Ocean Colour Scene at Llandudno on February 10th and Cardiff on February 11th.

Mike Peters bags a Sparrow for Christmas

Thanks for getting the V100MRJBM Gold Top in time for Christmas

A short article to thank Chris for fulfilling the order for my Vintage Icon series V100MRJBM Gold Top

Well it arrived and wow! Chris allowed me to open the box up in the shop – that’s how confident he is of the way these guitars are packaged by JHS. I had read somewhere that someone had bought one of the Vintage range guitars and actually arrived in tune – so much for making sure that the instruments are boxed correctly. Ahem, mine did need tuning, but who’s complaining – not me!

The guitar felt like I’d owned and used it for years – that’s the aging process that JHS uses on these guitars to give them the authentic feel of a true vintage instrument. I said before that it isn’t to everyone’s liking, but for me it’s ideal.

Plugging it in produced pleasing results; what a sound this guitar has. Truly amazing sound quality thanks to the Wilkinson pickups. Each note is clear and the power and tone is phenomenal.

After getting the guitar home and reading more about JHS guitars, I discovered that many of the guitars have celebrity status. Recent Vintage/Fret King endorsees include Paul Weller, Graham Oliver (Saxon), Mick Abrahams (Jethro Tull), John McCoy (Ian Gillan), Bernie Torme (Ozzy Osbourne and Gillan), John Verity (Argent) and Geoff Whitehorn (Procol Harem, Paul Rogers, Back Street Crawler).

Chris also told me he spoke to Graham Oliver at recent show. Graham described the Vintage Icon Lemon Drop as being a very comfortable instrument with a sound uncannily like many of the original Gibsons that he owns.

Geoff Whitehorn recently sang the Icon Lemon Drop's praises describing it as a bloody good guitar that hit far above its weight.

A short article by a satisfied customer to thank Chris for his advice and patience while I took over the shop!

I had a fantastic surprise on Saturday! My nearest and dearest has ordered me a beauty of guitar from Chris at Absolute Sound and Lighting Solutions in Greenfield Road, Colwyn Bay. I had a great time looking at the different guitars – SG, Stratocaster, Firebird, PRS other Les Paul versions. Have to say I was blown away by a glossy jet black Fret King Firebird. The quality of Fret King guitars is amazing and ASLS is one of the few stockists in North Wales.

I finally chose the the Vintage Icon series Joe Bonamassa style Les Paul. I like these "reliced" guitars because they feel great and the sound is authentic. There's also a Pete Green / Gary Moore Les Paul replica called the Lemon Drop, which is interesting, with its out of phase pick ups. (There are various aged versions in the Vintage Icon range, but if you don't want that well used look, choose one of the Vintage Reissue or Vintage Advance guitars.)

Anyone looking for a guitar for Christmas should pop down to the shop – ASLS don’t sell guitars on line for good reason: you need to try them out! Also, you may want a custom set up and its difficult to offer such a service online.

Guiding new bands and aspiring musicians in North Wales

On a long trip to London, sitting in a full and stuffy train carriage, we whiled the time away thinking about how we could help new bands and aspiring musicians. It is just as important for us to be recognised as seasoned music equipment experts as traders, but as they say: “Nothing is given so freely as advice.” Whoever they are, ought to look at it again as: “Advice is freely given and rarely taken.”

The last thing anyone wants is a music store salesperson saying you must buy this or that, here’s a real bargain and so on. We’ve all fallen foul to this kind of sales technique at some time or other. I clearly remember being recommended a certain PA system that the band quickly outgrew. It cost a small fortune – the entire band’s kitty – was supposed to be the best thing on the market, and within a matter of months was worthless. Even the relatively expensive mikes were useless for our needs – we ended using them for the instruments. Our next rig had 400 per cent more power and infinitely more capability – that tells you how easy it is to get it wrong. As for the mikes, we got better ones that cost two-thirds of the originals.

Same goes with backline / amps, guitars, mikes and all the other paraphernalia. In the music world, generally buying on price is asking for problems. Instead, you need to look at what you want to achieve, spec out the equipment carefully after considering all the alternatives available that suit your budget.

In this day and age of Internet shopping and bargain hunting, it is so easy just to research on price. A quick click and your committed. That is why we encourage you to call at the store and speak to us in person. In fact, how is this for a suggestion? Get your band together and come to see us for a bit of a consultation – best telephone us to warn us of your intentions. We’ll give you an appraisal and tell you how we can help. The original Mike Harrison and Malcom Hill PA kit - (H/H) was, along with Martin, Court and Turbosound, one of the leading British PA speaker equipment manufacturers of the 1980s.

Before the duo went their separate ways (Harrison PA equipment and Malcom Hill PA - all ACDC tours and Donnington in the 1980s) they left a legacy of great sounding kit.

We have a six box system availabe for sale. Four used 1X15 Unit III subs (2 loaded HH 1500E and two Eminence 300watt Kappa), two 1 X 12 and bullet mid tops (HH 1200e and bullet horn loaded) and two concert series radials (HH CD horn comp'driver) in concert series sleeves.

Rare Trace Elliot gear for sale

One of the best kept secrets of the original Trace Elliot gear was PA equipment that they produced in the early nineties. Compact, punchy and great sounding the kit was designed with ergonomics, portability and a great sound in mind.

This rig consists of a three way amp rack with a Trace Elliot system controller/limiter, two 600watt TE amps for four full range boxes and an audiohead 2.4KW amp for two TE 1X18 subs. The amps are housed in a rugged full flight case with front and back detachable doors.

All the 6 trapezodial style, marine plywood boxes are loaded with Preciscion Devices and Celestion drivers with the boxes covered in green carpet style covering with full steel kickproof grills.

The boxes are in fair condition having been gigged. Two PD 1X10 mid range drivers and two Celestion 1 inch compression drivers have recently been replaced. The rig has a full set of extra heavy duty Neutrek speak to speakon multi-way speaker cables.

The four full range boxes are configured 1X15 200watt Celestion, 1X10 200 watt PD and a Celestion one inch comp' driver on a CD flare. The subs are loaded with a 500 watt 18 inch which I believe are Celestion although they have never been opened up for inspection.

This is a compact and portable PA system capable of providing sound re-inforcement for venues accomodatong 300-400 people. The price of this system is £1,200.

Define a good amp! That’s what one customer said the other day. It got me thinking. Is there really such thing as a bad amplifier? Of course there is - if you buy crap, that is. But let’s not go there. Let’s think in the vein of affordable and quality. Next step, think about what you want it to do. It’s actually easier if you’re looking for something to flap your trousers (or skirt) and massage your drummer’s ears at the same time. However, for those more intimate practice sessions you need something that can still “kick” but not annoy the neighbours.

Kick is a good word, because it leads me onto to the Carlsboro KICKSTART. There are various versions of this, but I went with the 25 watt model. It is a superb piece of solid-state amplifier design and engineering. Its small size is no indication of what it can do – and I defy anyone to not fall in love with it.

You get two separate channels – clean and lead. Plus the manufacturer has blessed us with a very useful bank of usable built-in effects. And, you can get an optional footswitch to change channels and to turn the effects on and off.

One of the key things in small amp design is sturdiness. The designers have recessed the front of the cab / speaker grill so that if something or some lout falls on it, you won’t get a damaged speaker. (My other practice amp doesn’t have this feature and it now looks like it’s been to hell and back!) You also get a standard plug-in power lead with this, so you can pack it away with your other accessories when travelling to the gig or rehearsals. This is much better than having your power lead permanently fixed to the amp, where it will be damaged.

Coupled with 25-watt output you get a great amp that covers both home practice and will stretch to gigging if you mic it up through your PA. Try that with the delay, chorus or flanger effects and you create a spine-tingling atmosphere.

In playing terms, the amps circuits allow you to get some pleasing sounds at all volumes. The tone and effects don’t die on you just because you turn the volume down, nor do they distort to the point of destruction when you crank it up. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

Effects pedals and essential pedals

Guitar and bass effects are important. They can enhance your sound – they can also make you sound awful! So choose your pedals wisely!

Where do you begin? Well, turn your thoughts to essential pedals first. The number 1 being the compressor.

Every guitar and bass player should take advantage of a compressor pedal. This should be your start point for your collection of essential – effects – pedals. (Some people would argue a foot controlled on and off switch should be your first, but there you go and this is our blog anyway.)

I use a Behringer CS100. This is a compressor pedal with the added advantage of offering sustain too. It looks like a traditional big name brand pedals from the 1970s / 1980s, but its bang up to date technology at a good price. It’s rugged – made from tough plastic and the foot-operated switch is sturdy. I’ve been using mine for a few years and it’s never let me down once. Battery life is good and you can buy an optional power pack, which is handy.

The photo shows my actual pedal and you can see it’s not that battered after heavy but careful use – the trick is be mean and don’t let anyone else in the band get their mitts on it!

Why do I say this is an essential pedal? Simple. It evens out the guitar signal to the amplifier and allows you to shape the sound. You don’t get uneven volumes from each string and the sustain feature means you get a nice smooth sustain across the range. You can adjust your level and attack which is also useful. The tone adjust also adds a bit more colour to the normal tone spectrum of your instrument.

The positions shown in the photo are pretty much what I stick to, but you can experiment to suit your own taste – as well as to match your axe and amp.

A compressor allows you to squeeze a lot more out of your guitar and amp’s standard features. You will be surprised. I’ve got a reissue of a 50s model guitar with relatively low-output pickups, but with this pedal I can get some screaming harmonics. As for my basses – it just boosts their sound capabilities. If you have passive pick ups you'll hear a huge difference and you will be able to play more delicately without muffling your sound. And, at higher volumes, you'll be able to spank your plank until it growls.

Behringer don’t stop at compressor / sustainers. The company offers a comprehensive range of pedals – you can even get a nice case to stick them all in, giving you a decent neat pedal board for stage and practice use. So any aspiring Edges or Bellamys out there can build up a tasty sonorous collection in no time – they won’t make you play like the real thing but at least you can become a sound-alike!

Summer holidays are on the way and it is the time to make sweet music – well at least try to! On this note, I was thinking about days of yore when my friends and I wanted to form our first band. The struggle to get decent instruments and sound systems was overwhelming. Our budgets just couldn’t run to Fender, Gibson and Marshall – and then there was the high cost of a PA. Everyone had to have a Shure microphone – anything less was a big issue for the big ego front man or woman.

Today, things are different. You can get great kit at a decent price. Electric guitar manufacturing has come a long way. Replica guitars can look, feel and sound like the real thing these days. Having a copy is not such a bad thing any more (some are even better than the real thing in some cases). Same with amplifiers. You can get a great amp at an affordable price that you can crank up past 11 to blast out the decibels or turn down for practising. You can even stick on a pair of headphones for ‘silent’ mode – and keep your sound that you’ve agonised over for hours to get just right.

Llanddulas did itself proud last weekend staging a two day event that hosted an appearance by the legendary Dr and the Medics.

Well done to the organisers of this event, it was well staged and even enjoyed some really fine summer weather.

Local bands such as Steamy indows, Rufus and Pinc Ffloyd were also given a stage, all performing admirably.

I know that the boys from Sphincter promotions were impressed and are already in negociations with the Medics in a bid to bring them back to a local venue asap. Watch this space!

Levellers to level Rhuddlan Castle

Just been speaking with the Alarm's Mike Peters over production and staging details for a major open air event being staged at Rhuddlan Castle on August 7th.

The bill features the Levellers, Mike Peters and Nick Harper amongst others and runs from 4pm-8.30pm inside the castle walls on Saturday August 7th 2010.

Mike has been instrumental in spreading the word of his Love, Hope Strength foundation aroun the world over the past three years. The charity aims to raise money to fund equipment for hospitals fighting the battle against leukemnia and also to help fund research into the disease.

The concert will be a cracking family day out with superb sound and staging being rpovided by Yorkshire based Huw Jones and AB's Huw "Buzby" Evans, stalwart of many Gathering shows in North Wales.

Rock Star at Colwyn Bay FC

A busy week and weekend of dry hires, sales and shows /speech days ended with a bit o r'n'r in the good company of Nottingham rock covers band Rockstar who played a blinder of a North Wales debut at Colwyn Bay FC on Saturday night.

The show was one of a number of events being promoted in the Bay by Sphincter Promotions who are doing a great job in bringing quality live bands to this sleepey musical backwater.

Young band Kick Start Kitty (featuring former members of the band Bite) showed up well and will be one of the names to watch out for on the North Wales live music scene in the forthcoming months.
